Labour Suite is a very busy ward located on the fifth floor opposite 5B ward in New Mulago.

The ward is split into 2 main areas; high risk ‘PET side’ and low risk ‘first stage side’.

Labour suite theatre is also located within the ward so that patients that require emergency C Section can be immediately and easily transferred to the theatre.

In 2008 a total of 30, 517 babies were delivered in the Mulago Hospital Complex; nearly 20,000 of these were delivered on this main labour ward alone.

The department is very busy as patients are referred here from other centres when complicated problems are encountered; over 25,000 patients were admitted through this main labour ward in 2008.  The ward is staffed 24hours/day by a team of dedicated doctors and midwives.

Patient care Management of patients in this division involves a multidisciplinary team, not limited to the expertise of a single person and/or a technology

Specialists in this division should have the theoretical and practical knowledge in detailed risk assessment before, during and after pregnancy, antenatal diagnosis of the wide range of feto-maternal disorders, some of which may require invasive procedures and the management of very high risk pregnancies during the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period. The comprehensive management of these patients includes diagnostic & therapeutic procedures and audit of outcome.

The division provides services for referral and transfer of patients who would benefit from sub-specialty facilities, expertise and experience. It aims to establish a close collaboration with related disciplines in order to provide the high degree of teamwork and concentration of resources required for the intensive investigation and management of such patients. There is a special care baby unit nearby (on ward 5B) run by paediatricians.

The adult intensive care unit on 3rd floor (ward 3D-Intensive Care) has a full range of diagnostic facilities and support systems that are readily available to the obstetric unit. Location

The materno-fetal unit is found on the 5th floor ofLower Mulago Hospital on ward 5B and 5C. Ward 5C mainly handles antenatal mothers with complications of pregnancy such as multiple pregnancies, infections in pregnancy, medical disorders of pregnancy (e.g. diabetes mellitus, asthma, sickle cell disease etc). Mothers admitted for elective caesarean section are also admitted on this ward. Ward 5B is mainly for post-delivery mothers; both normal deliveries and post caesarean section.
