Research

The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has been involved in many researches both in the past and present.  The department as a whole embraces research and all staff have become accustomed to different research being conducted in the various different areas.

The department is very keen to develop further and get involved with more research projects. It is conducted by both the members of staff and the graduate students. Prominent among previous research done include; the HIVNET-012 trial that led to the widespread use of Nevirapine for prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT), the RELEASE study which looked at the use of umbilical oxytocin for retained placenta in collaboration with the University of Liverpool and the multicenter MagPie Trial for the use MgSO4 for prevention of eclampsia.

Numerous other studies include hormonal contraceptives and the risk of HIV acquision, emergency contraception awareness, HPV in post natal mothers, cancer of cervix screening, anaemia in post natal mothers, nutrition, HIVNET, SIMBA, HIISIGCOB, 027, 046, TREGS, PHICS,  HIV prevention trial network, HIVGLOB nevirapine, cleft palate/lip and PIERS.

Current and previous research in the department is listed in the table below. This list is by no means exhaustive because of the previous difficulty in archiving and retrieving information.
