Welcome to The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

1)The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Mulago Hospital offers many services as part of the National Referral Hospital complex.  It is also one of the departments in the School of Medicine, itself a part of the Makerere University College of Health Sciences based atMulago Hospital.It is chaired by the Head of Department, Dr J.K Byamugisha.

2) This busy department offers a wide range of clinical services. For purposes of streamlining teaching, research and patient care, it is divided into four main sub-specialities. The majority of the department is situated on the fifth (5th) floor of the New Mulago Hospital Complex (Lower Mulago Hospital).  Some services are also located in Old Mulago (Upper Mulago).
 

 
 
3) The department has several members of staff. There are the senior members of staff who are comprised of mainly specialists. Among these are the academic staff employed by Makerere University and theMulago Hospital staff, which are employed by the Ministry of Health. The junior members of staff include; the senior house officers (postgraduate students), junior house officers (intern doctors), nurses, midwives and support staff. The nursing staff make up the majority of the staff members.

4) Mulago hospital is a teaching hospital and the department offers several academic programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. A lot of research has taken place in the department and still more research is on going constantly. Some of the breakthrough work that has been done in the department includes the HIV-012 trial that led to the widespread use of nevirapine for prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT).

 
 

 
 

5) The department of obstetrics and gynaecology is a very dynamic one with lots of events every week. Some of these are organised internally by the staff, whereas others are organised externally.
Every morning, work in the department begins with a morning meeting. In this meeting events of the last 24 hours are discussed. Audit meetings are also held on a regular basis.

6) The department has established collaborations with other universities and research institutions such as The University of Liverpool, U.K, The Karolinska Institute of Sweden, John Hopkins University in the United States and many others.
