Up Coming Events

Each day in the department begins with the morning hand over, this starts at 8.30 am every week day.  In this meeting reports are given about what has happened in each of the different clinical areas and any difficult cases are confidentially discussed.

Weekly Events

After the morning meeting there are often CMEs continuing medical education, for staff.  Lectures include a wide variety of topics from a wide variety of presenters from around the world.  These lectures keep all of the staff up to date.

Each week on Thursdays there are specific CMEs for midwives, theses are called ‘Midwife Updates’ so that midwives from the whole department can continue learning new things, revising old ones and improving their skills.

Each Thursday morning after the morning meeting maternal and perinatal death cases are reviewed.  Maternal and perinatal deaths are disasters which unfortunately occur in our setting, this meeting allows us to learn from each case so that we all improve our skills and change any factors which are found to be avoidable.

Each Wednesday morning in journal club, just before the morning meeting, up to date articles are critically appraised so that knowledge is kept up to date and we ensure to critically analyse all research that is read.

Midwife of the Month Award

A visiting student midwife fromBelgium was struck by the overwhelming amount of work that midwives in  Mulago do, with little recognition for the good that is done.  Therefore in collaboration with Pastor Martin Ssempa this award was conceptualised, with the aim of recognising those that work well and motivating all of the staff.  Each month the staff nominate a midwife according to certain criteria, who they feel has performed well.  The one with the most votes becomes midwife of the month, receives a certificate, a small amount of money and her photo on the wall for that month.  So far winners include;
