Collaboration with other Institutions
The department of obstetrics and gynaecology has established a number of collaborations with other universities and research institutions around the world, notably the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom . The Karolinska Institute in Sweden and John Hopkins University in the United tates of America International collaboration has a wide variety of potential benefits for all parties; as such the department is keen to develop these activities for mutual benefit on patient care, education and research.University of LiverpoolRelations between Makerere College of Health Sciences and theUniversity of Liverpool developed strongly as Dr A Weeks, a consultant from U.K, worked as a visiting lecturer for Makerere College of Health Sciences several years ago. Now working for theUniversity of Liverpool these research links have grown stronger through mutual work on a variety of studies on misoprostol and retained placenta and development of the Maternal Health Partnership.www.liv.ac.uk Liverpool Mulago Partnership for Maternal and Child Health In 2009 the research collaboration withLiverpool has also developed into a formal educational exchange programme called Liverpool Mulago Partnership. Staff fromMulago Hospital and Liverpool Women’s Foundation Trust visit the other institution for 2-4 weeks in order to fulfil specific learning objectives which can not be met at the home institution. So far one Doctor has visited the U.K, Dr S Nakubulwa and 2 staff have visited Mulago, Dr M Clement Jones, a consultant obstetrician and a midwife Mari Griffiths fromLiverpool. The next exchange visits are due to happen in September/October 2009. The focus for LMP 2009 has been materno-fetal medicine and labour ward, with the specific aim of developing the labour suite theatre post operative recovery area.
