The Uganda Heart Institute Ltd (UHI) is a semi-autonomous institution of Mulago Hospital Complex and serves as a centre for the provision of curative and preventive cardiovascular and thoracic medical services.

It was jointly established in 1988 by four bodies: The Ministry of Health, Mulago National Referral and Teaching Hospital, Makerere University Medical School, and Uganda Heart Foundation (a Non-Governmental Organization composed of well wishers like Rotarians). In April 2001 it was registered as a limited company by guarantee.

At its inception, the four bodies drew up a memorandum of understanding to spell out the roles of each body in the administration, operation, and funding of the Institute. The Institute is manned by technical staffing seconded from Mulago Hospital (Ministry of Health) and Makerere University (Ministry of Education) all being institutions of the Government of Uganda.

Currently the Institute is well established, with administrative, technical, and support staff.

Initially located at Upper Mulago (Old Mulago), the UHI is currently located on the First floor of Mulago Hospital Complex; Block C. Patients coming in by ambulance seeking emergency care can access the Institute via the second floor on the Northern side of Lower Mulago Hospital (New Mulago Hospital).

VISION.

The Institute’s vision is to become a centre of excellence in the care of heart and heart-related diseases in the Great Lakes region of Africa and beyond.

MISSION.

The Uganda Heart Institute exists to serve as a centre of excellence for the provision of comprehensive medical services to patients with cardiovascular and thoracic diseases and to offer opportunity for research and training in cardiovascular and thoracic medicine at an affordable cost so as to facilitate service delivery and enable continuous development of the Institute in itself.
